The Quietest Year explores the often-ignored crisis of noise pollution, which has significant public health and environmental justice implications in Vermont and beyond. The lockdown provided a temporary relief from the main source of noise pollution: transportation.

Full statement from the Chair of
UK Noise Association (below)

John Stewart, Chair of the UK Noise Association, responds to the
BBC news item
'Planning change to make installing heat pumps easier for millions'
There is no doubt that the relaxation of the rules on distance, size and number of heat pumps will increase the noise problems, especially for people in terraced homes, shared and social housing. A socially regressive measure. There is also nothing about tightening the rules on the all-important tone (pitch) of the noise. Many heat pumps are improving but the noise problems they create have not been sorted out."

Welcome from our Honorary President, Val Weedon MBE.

A QUIET WORD

Picture

In 1991 I embarked on a local campaign to highlight the problem of neighbour noise after my partner and I had been forced to move house following a year long dispute with a noisy anti-social neighbour.  That local campaign turned into a national campaign and nine years further down the line I had made contact with many other campaigners involved in actively trying to do something about noise that impacted in many types of forms.
As well as neighbour noise, there was community noise, traffic noise, aircraft noise, wind turbine noise, industrial noise and background noise (or piped music).  Together,  we would meet regularly to share our concerns at this growing menace.  Then in the year 2000 we decided to set up a coalition and call ourselves the UK Noise Association.   We managed to secure some funding that enabled us to influence  politicians and policy makers.  In 2011 our book Why Noise Matters was published. Highly recommended for those wanting to know more.
Although we have a small amount of funding remaining, all our work these days is carried out voluntarily by a small team of dedicated UK Noise Association activists.   As an organisation we believe that noise reduction is achievable, but we are also realistic that it is an on-going problem with new issues rearing its ugly head all the time.   A lot of noise reduction is down to simple behaviour modification and the rest is down to the will of politicians, planners, policy makers and the manufacturing industry producing quieter products for the future.

We hope you will do your bit and help make the world a quieter place.
